💼 Supreme Court Allows Abortion Pills

In a 7-2 decision, the Supreme Court upheld the accessibility of mifepristone.

The proposed ban on mifepristone had drawn widespread criticism from politicians and pharmaceutical companies alike. They argued that the ban could lead to a slippery slope of useful drugs being pushed off the market, including birth control and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) medications.

This ruling is a major win for the Biden administration. Because of the recent Texas district court ruling that would have removed the abortion drug from the market.

💊 Amazon’s Pill Plan

Three years after launching its online pharmacy business, Amazon Pharmacy is still finding its footing.

In a recent interview with Healthcare Dive, Vin Gupta, Chief Medical Officer of Amazon Pharmacy, discussed the company's recent initiatives to increase affordability, including a new generic drug subscription for Prime members and coupons for certain medications. Gupta also emphasized the need to educate providers on Amazon's options for prescriptions, as awareness remains relatively low.

Despite these challenges, Amazon Pharmacy has experienced double-digit growth over the past year, thanks to partnerships with PBM Prime Therapeutics, various insurance plans, and providers. Gupta also teased upcoming updates to affordability initiatives, including a plan to expand the current list of eight medications for select conditions with unmet needs.

However, Gupta acknowledged that Amazon Pharmacy's offerings may not result in meaningful savings for all consumers. He noted that the company is taking steps towards affordability and transparency in drug selection.

Overall, Gupta stressed the importance of building awareness among providers and patients. Word-of-mouth is a key part of this strategy.
